1. You're a somebody. Don't ever put yourself down, or compare yourself to some other person. You're something that they're not: You're you.
2. People do love you, so don't ever feel like you're alone.
3. Take life seriously 'cause you only get to have it once.
4. Dreams are not JUST dreams, they're your hope, your inspiration, so keep on dreaming.
5. Always be nice.

-Be brave. Life goes on, and you will make it.
-Real friends are few and far between. Hang on to the ones you love, and don't waste time on the ones that make you feel like less than you are.
-Try new things. Be adventurous.
-Everyone has parts of themselves that they don't show. Give them a chance, look them in the eye.
-Love. Love. Love. Feel. It's hard, but you won't live if you don't love.

1. Read. Read as much as you can. There's the education you get from school, and there's the education you get from life. Let books be a part of that.
2. Always love someone once. Before you meet them even. I'm not saying trust everyone, or even freely. Just love.
3. Don't be afraid of feeling foolish. It will just leave you inert.
4. Don't just sit around thinking about how if you were just *different* in some way, you could be or do or say what you want. Try. If you fail, so be it. But if you succeed, well, if you succeed you will feel like the most amazing person in the world.
5. Enjoy being a child. It doesn't last.

@lombardian Wow, you are amazing and took the words right out of my mouth. At least in terms of Christian free will. I read Paradise Lost by John Milton my senior year of high school and I developed a similar sentiment when I really thought about the Christian interpretation of God's behavior in the epic poem. I mean, how is it really "free will" if choosing not to love God results in punishment. Call me crazy, but that sounds a little bit like forcing someone to feel something they may not, which in itself is disingenuous and inauthentic. Why would an individual want someone to love him if it is not pure and of choice?

And how that concept of free will relates to the whole "God is the only answer" thing. I mean even though I personally feel as though the Divine or Consciousness is the answer to everything because it is the reason everything in the Universe exists, I don't think it is necessary to imply that if one comes to a different conclusion that they are somehow wrong. Maybe the individual asks different questions and comes to alternative answers that are true for them. Who or What really knows anything for sure anyways? Except maybe for the answers themselves in which we are seeking... :)

Your grandfather is a good man, if you ever need anything go to him. Blood doesn't make your family, its those that never leave you that do. All you can do is the best you can with what you have, and thats enough. Love isn't easy. Its hard work. Only the very lucky end up with their Soulmates. And just because you don't doesn't mean your love was any less real. One day, when it is raining, open a window and put on some Miles Davis. The Kind of Blue Album. And just Breathe.

1. No mistake you could or will ever make will disqualify you from God's love or His work. Nothing you ever do will ever make Him love you even the slightest bit less than He loves His own Son. You will make mistakes. Big ones. Learn from them and let them go.

2. The Church will screw you up as much as your parents will, but like your parents, it is necessary and unavoidable. Faith *cannot* be lived alone. Find a community seeking to live and love God together and invest deeply enough for it to hurt you. Your soul will be made beautiful, like seaglass.

3. Choose a vocation and a mate based on *who you want to be* not what you want to do or who you want to be with. Hold onto the job/person that makes you your favorite version of yourself.

4. Love is not an emotion, it is a decision and an action. *Always* choose love. Never ever ever ever reject an offer of friendship.

5. Hold the world in an open palm. If you cannot give your possessions away, they possess you. If you hold onto your convictions after they have been proven false, it is idolatry. Want God, not your idea of God. Want your neighbor, not your idea of your neighbor. Want yourself, not your idea of yourself.

I will love you forever.

It might be obvious, but these lessons are good for all of us to live by. I am struck by the depth of some of them - simple sentences that carry much power. But, in writing these for our future children, are we forgetting to follow them ourselves? I wonder, if we look at what we ourselves wrote, if we are not taking them to heart. If not, why not? We obviously think they are important enough to pass along. Does "life" get in the way? Don't let it. Live by your own statements, and take to heart the statements of many others here. YOU are STILL worthy of believing and living by many of these thoughts. Carry on.

That's kind of similar to Christian "free will", where in you're able to make any decision you want, but ultimately there's only one right decision and the alternative is hell. It's like the government telling you that you have a choice in paying your taxes or not, but they'll send you to jail if you don't.

1. God is fake. Don't use God as an excuse or a scapegoat. You are in complete control of your own future. However, if someone does try to keep you from succeeding in life, kick their fuckin' ass and try even harder to succeed.

2. Your school teacher will tell you that swear words are only for people too stupid to not use swear words. Well, fuck that shit. Your teacher is probably a stupid, fat bitch, and she knows it. But always study and do your homework, or else you'll end up stupid, just like her.

3. Do not lie - ever. Stealing is a form of lying, and only fuckin' losers steal. That sort of lifestyle comes from simple laziness, a sense of entitlement and ignorant fuckin' parents. You're better than that; you're a Republican.

4. Don't become a walking representation of any stereotype. Don't label yourself and don't allow anybody else to label you. You do what you know is right for you to do, regardless of any expectations or prejudices.

I hate to disagree with the poster, but... Isn't that sort of illogical? To say, in essence, that if you don't believe in God, you must have a logic problem? That would be, in my humble opinion, a boneheaded thing to tell a kid.

I love this question! Very thought provoking.

1. Be yourself, no matter what happens, you were FEARFULLY and WONDERFULLY created, every part of you is beautiful and sacred. Never forget that, even when it's really hard... and it will be.

2. Be curious! Ask questions! The world around you is a mysterious and beautiful place full of adventures and amazing people, never stop searching, asking, seeking, learning and creating relationships with people. Reading, talking, seeing, traveling, writing, never stop! Absorb what you learn take in the wisdom of people around you weather it be in the pages you read or the conversations you have. Enjoy life! It's a beautiful gift!

3. Practice passionate love, fearless trust, unending forgiveness and "dangerous unselfishness". Life is tough, but these things make us a part of something bigger than ourselves and connect us all, remember that everyone deserves the respect and fullness of these things from you, no matter what.

4. Life can be really tough, but at the end of the day, remember that you are NEVER alone. God, your family, your friends; we're always with, and never more than a breath or a phone call away.

5. Never stop creating. Art, photographs, poetry, paintings, sand castles, mud pies, anything! Don't ever lose your imagination and desire to express yourself. Add the the beautiful, like the people before you and the people after you.

1. if you ever question how much you are loved, or unloved, stop, because you will never be able to fathom the depths at which you are
2. always listen. you never have to agree, but always listen.
3. don't ever think that anybody, no matter who, has any greater or lesser value than you. this is hard, but it is very important.
4. strive for faith and understanding, relentlessly, and you will receive it.
5. know that you are here uniquely and beautifully and your days are numbered to do what no one else can, and spend your thoughts trying to figure out what that is and do it like no on else was made to.

Our first child will be along in about 3 months. So, this something I've been chewing on quite a bit lately.

1. Learning acceptance is often the key to choosing happiness.
2. Everyone makes mistakes; a person's character is shown in what they learn from and how they react to their mistakes; just keep learning and growing.
3. It will always help you to be polite to other people.
4. Many will try to convince you that their belief about religion is the correct one. The one you *choose for yourself* is the correct one for you (even if it changes). Be wary of people who claim to have all the answers; sometimes they aren't even asking the right questions.
5. You choose everyday what kind of person you will be. Consider all life's teachers, but ultimately you decide who you are, what you believe, and how you live.

i'm not trying to be disrespectful, but the 5 listed by the poster of this thread are based on fear and and faith alone. rats have babies. is that a miracle? i question why people are albino, my answer is lack of pigment not because god did it. i believe we are more than randomly evolved pieces of goo but that list seems like it would create a non-proactive child who will hate god when things don't go their way.

my list...
-treat everyone with kindness and respect.
-work hard to achieve your goals.
-laugh often.
-love a lot.
-help as many people/animals and the environment as much as you can.

1. be happy with yourself- at the end of the day you need to be able to look yourself in the mirror and be satisfied. run your life in a way that you can honestly say that you are happy with where you are at any second of any day.
2. do good things- the greatest joy i have found is in helping others. try it.
3. never stop learning and really listen- you will never know EVERYTHING so keep on expanding what you do know. someone will always have a better/different idea or way of looking at things, be sure to hear them out.
4. be open- to everything. there is no 'right' answer on how to live, you have to figure it out for yourself, so be open to everyone and everything. being closed-minded begets ignorance and ignorance begets hatred, don't go down that path.
5. have fun- if you can't find the fun and laughter in something, it's not worth doing.
