As a parent of 4 kids ages 6 and under, silence surprises me. Most times it also warns me of impending doom.

I'm all for playing with sounds. That's awesome! However, when I think of how much precision and artistry goes into making a piano, and when I think of what beautiful, moving music can come from one, it hurts my soul a little to see someone recklessly burning them! AHHHH! I'm hoping that it was irreparable?

The distant, unnatural hum of electricity in an otherwise silent / sterile environment

@flux Neat. Well, if you mess around with handwritting elsewhere, let me know how it works out. :)

Some dumba$$ kid's bass, driving down the road. Or, those POS motorcycle p@#%^#$ that rev the engine.

Oh yeah, hobbsie11's answer is very true too! Silence.

Silence. I'm so used to talking and laughing or blaring music that utter silence surprises me sometimes. Especially when it comes suddenly.

Celestial sounds. Kind voices.

Food. Cooking, boiling, burning, toasting and mixing.

@Phuquer wow, do you remember what that album was called/who made it? i'd like to hear that.

@joyfed i reeallly like that idea about handwriting. it can be so musical and expressive. i've been experimenting with a tiny little camera(from an old webcam) attached to a pen, writing on flesh. its dizzying and really sensual- but it doesnt make noise so much.

when i paint i like to make vocal sounds along with my brushstrokes. im not really conscious of this, its an autopilot sort of deal. sometimes the sounds i make surprise me. wonderfully weird. and the swoosh of canvas is great.

Know how some smooth surfaces make an odd sound when we run our fingers over them when they're wet? I'd like to see him play with that.

This reminds me of an NPR segment I heard a few months ago about a typewriter symphony. I believe they were from MI. I was amazed by the music they were able to create. Did anyone else hear that segment? Does anyone recall who they are?

I've always been a fan of the sound of bubble wrap popping. I love popping the tiny bubbles! The sound of water balloons when they hit something/someone is another fun sound.

Right now I am sitting here listening to the sound of my electronic date stamper tick away the minutes. It's sort of a deep thud sound. It used to drive me crazy, but now I kind of enjoy it.

But seriously, I think maybe you could do something cool with a well-placed microphone and different writing utensils writing on different surfaces. Even the sounds of print as opposed to cursive... angry letters versus love notes, different languages... who knows.

Hands down, the bleating of a tauntaun.

@Mayachen love it!!!

I'd love to hear the sound of small creatures...ants, spiders, bugs, whatever that's so small we cant hear it but you KNOW it makes a noise.

I hear God in the Diesel engine (any engine really)...

The whiping sound of a steel cable when it snaps, not really an instrument, just a neat noise.

Could you find a way to record the sounds a plant makes as it grows? We can't even really notice what a plant looks like as it grows without time elapsed photography, so something like that except with sound would be fascinating.
Listened to more of your work, Diego. Beautiful. Ineffable.

Oh yeah, and that reminds me, years ago I heard an album which was s symphony of insect sounds. Quite beautiful. And the sound of cicadas is like a lullaby to me. I can slip off into dreamland listening to them.

I love the "POP" a fluorescent light bulb makes when it breaks. Glass in general breaking. We have recycling containers at the supermarkets here and whenever I throw mine in I do it extra hard to be sure it breaks. We have an ornamental grass in the garden that when it rustles makes the most magnificent sound.

I'd have to go with cooking sounds. I'd like to see/hear a sizzling skillet, chopping of veggies, boiling water, cracking an egg, pouring a glass of milk, etc. Maybe cliche' , but I like it.

Nature's sounds: the whisper of the winds, the rustling of the leaves, the gurgling of brooks, the roar of gales, the thunder of storms, the diverse sounds of animals, birds, the sound of walking on a pine needled forest floor, stepping on fallen autumn leaves......ocean waves, whales singing....unending

"To me, music is an expressive form of communication that allows unique types of interactions."

What is more amazing than the voice, instrument, or a whole chorus at a perfect harmony to make someone feel something, anything. Music has defined lives and there is no way we could ever repay music for bringing so much to our lives.

(As I listen to The Shins) ...amazing.
