God is not American
God is not religious
God is not conservative
God is not pro-choice
God is not distant
1. God is not an excuse to sin because forgiveness is free to those who repent at the back of our heads.
2. God is not an almighty vacuum who listens to our rants because he is a loving Father who wants an intimate relationship with us.
3. God is not a slave driver who sits back and watches our daily toil in his heavenly throne because he is a God who wants to see faith in action before he blesses us more.
4. God is not unreachable or so far out because He created man in order for us to love Him back, commune with Him, and be in His presence. I believe that He delights in my sincere seeking of His presence.
5. God is not guarantee that life will be flawless but His grace allows a finite being to see through His challenges. Thus, a relationship with Him is deepened.
1. God is not a cure-all answer to any question.
2. God is not an excuse to harm any person.
3. God is not an invention of our own imagination.
4. God is not a lucky rabbits foot.
5. God is not an old man sitting in a cloud that is entertained by us.
@Augustine @Augustine i hear ya, and i agree with you about "fairness" from our human perspective... but the Divine perspective is much different, and what i understand to be true about God is something that only seems unjust when you don't see the entirety of it- (which we can't possibly comprehend)
of course we want to know the Universe is just- and because of this, we imagine how it must be...and we want those who hurt us… to hurt even greater than the hurt that they have caused…
we like to assign God our own attributes, and we can't seem to imagine how the Divine could possibly be greater than us…
I suggest this- the difference between a human perspective and a Godly one is- Unconditional Love and Unlimited Forgiveness.
i know i am not going to change your mind about your beliefs...i just wanted to explain another perspective, since you asked about it.
reincarnation is a key to this understanding...and well, if you don't buy that, the rest won't make sense. The point of reincarnation is exactly what I have explained before- to Ascend…to Evolve…
I ask do you agree that we grow and evolve as a spiritual being throughout our lifetime now? Well imagine adding upon that growth and understanding for multiple lifetimes…it makes complete sense to me..
karma is not easy to explain, and saying that people who experience a difficult life (such as the ex. you gave) deserve it because of a past life seems harsh and cruel- unless you understand the larger truth- that we enter into these lifetimes with a goal in mind…we are not victims, but knowing and willing participants in our own ascention..
we each have been it all- the sinner and the saint, the pauper and the king, the evil one and the savior..whatever we needed to learn at a particular time, we agreed to incarnate as--- again reincarnation is key here
i also just want to say that these unspeakable evils that we spoke of, are not the sole responsibility of one man's darkness- ie hitler rose to power >>>and was not contested! he was allowed to commit horrors while other "good people" stood by and did nothing. it was a collective evil, a collective unconsciousness that was responsible...and this happens a lot in the world- many horrors happen because not enough ‘good people’ stand up. I just want to point out the interconnectedness of life- of us, and our collective responsibility..
also many terrible things are done in the name of God- you don't have to go searching too deep to find the horrors of the Christian church, or any religious group.
I suggest that this darkness is the source of the same feelings in us that says- “we need vengance!” “we need to know that the unjust are paying the price!” this impulse is what humanity as a whole must overcome.. each and every human being has their own individual battle with the this darkness.
Anyway- my wish is to share another perspective..that’s all…peace

@nicoleshubby
What an interesting progression....your #5 is almost a direct quote from several documents that are almost 2700 years old! Please check out a book called Isaiah & chapter 58 - it'll only take 3 minutes to read (try it in the New International Version). This speaks volumes about social justice, equality between 'classes', and living a counter-cultural life in a me-first world.
God is not Santa Claus (making a list....)

God is not uninterested
God is not kind
God is not cruel
God is not listening or watching
God is not necessary (which, if he exists, is just how he should have planned it)
@schmabigail The incomprehensibility of God is part of the fundamental nature of God. The fact that everything else in universe can have another thing be like it; even though there can be no snowflake that is exactly the same as the next, they are all water crystallized at high altitudes. There is nothing like God but God.
The only way something can be totally understood (even mostly understood) is by looking at a thing is and taking our knowledge of other parts of the universe and bringing it for a comparison, only to learn what a thing is, whether it be in terms of history, science, culture, or even love. There only descriptions of what we can try to understand of what God is, and they're only names and aspects, numbering 7, 10, 72, 100, or 108 (and more) depending on who's counting.
This relates to the main question, or my interpretation of it: how can a being/a thing unknowable - 'ineffable', as the true name of God is referred to as - be anything more tangible than the moon in the sky. Something that's there but not really necessary. The movement through life and living won't diminish whether the moon is new or full, if God is or isn't.
God is... I feel profane going further because who among is qualified to? Here's how I used to think when I when to a church that used the Bible as the infallible manual to life:
1. God is not going to save everyone from hell.
2. God is not into gay people.
3. God does not accept anything less than orthodoxy of belief
4. God doesn't miss anything
5. God does not stop bad things from happening because they are part of his plan.
Here's what I think now:
1. God is not a giant human with our emotions and values, perhaps it's a little narcissistic to view him as such.
2. God didn't really kill all those people in the Old Testament.
3. God is not as scary as I used to think.
4. God is not present in a tangible way to me.
5. God is not interested as much in our rituals as in our actions.
1.God is not the one to blame.
2. God is not fashionably dressed.
3. God is not impressed.
4. God is not worried you haven't called.
5. God is not watching reality television.
a) God does not answer all questions, "Yes." What's the fun in that?
b) God does not need to explain.
c) God does not take a day off.
d) God doesn't need to put up with your shit... but he does anyway.
e) God doesn't condemn you for eating meat on a Friday of Lent, Catholics (myself included).
God is not:
~as unforgiving and judgmental as some people will claim
~partial to one person or group of people over another
~a man sitting on a throne on a cloud
~responsible for your messed up life or the things that are wrong in the world
~going to apologize for the tornado that blew away your trailer park
~My God is not Christian. God is not Jewish, or Muslim, or Hindi. God is of all and in all.
~My God is not able to be contained in a book written BY the hands of man.
~My God is not pissed off by someone saying they don't believe in him. He's pissed off at people who do untold horrors in his name.
~My God is merciful. He values love between people, no matter what the sex or orientaion.
~My God is not your god. My God understands that statement, and yours doesn't.
@Michael7843853 who said incomprehensible? i think thats a terrible choice of words, God is not incomprehensible...we can definitally think about what God is...we'll just never get to the end of said thought because God is unending. so i think i kind of agree with you.
+God is not caused.
+God does not exist because of human necessity.
+God is not unable, but he may be unwilling.
+God is not amused by our failures and problems.
+God is not the reason for suffering.
God is not ~
~a physical entity
~represented by judgmental people
~a something to fight over
~explainable
~worried about religion
1. God is not a weapon, tucked away inside your fist.
2. God is not an ideal you to which you only hold your enemies.
3. God is not a suitable explanation.
4. God is not admissible as evidence.
5. God is not going to throw you in Hell for critical thinking.
@Augustine they got away with it in this life but I think God's judgment in death is where they receive their punishment.
@marchballad I never said I liked it but I believe the Bible and it says that God will judge us in the end.
@zenmb Thought provoking sentiments Zenmb. Honestly, I don't think an eternal reincarnation cycle is fair punishment for holocaust.
Also, how is one evolving and ascending spiritually if they just keep dying, forgetting what they learned and then reincarnating all over again (for eternity)? What's the point?
With regards to karma, are you saying that the victims of atrocities somehow merited the evil practiced against them due to "sins" they committed in previous lifetimes? I don't think African American children being stripped naked and lynched in the early 20th century south endured that crime due to previous mistakes they made in past lifetimes. They suffered those crimes due to the sinfulness and evil of their tormentor's hearts.
@Augustine is vengence and unending punishment the only retrebution you can imagine for people who commit injustices?
i believe all souls are eternal, and all souls grow from spiritual infancy to spiritual maturity...i'm not saying that there aren't consequences to our actions...we all have to reap the sometimes painful stings of karma, in order to grow and evolve...just wanted to suggest to you the idea that all evil and injustice was created by the choices of our past, and perhaps we get the chance to redo those choices as we learn from, grow, evolve and ascend into the future...
not to make light of such horrific evils like hitler or any murderer--but i suggest the idea that life continues and God's light shines upon the just and the unjust...and because God is eternal, and so are we- we have the opportunities to experience all of it- to be on both sides, to evolve and ascend upwards. can't you imagine the most powerful rehabilitation program? {God's Love}
now noone gets away with anything, as you suggest- but as i imagine and understand it, we have plenty of lifetimes to switch roles and learn the lessons we need to learn. this makes sense to me- not that anyone deserves bad circumstances in life- but that we all were in and will be in each others shoes...and we all in a sense are--- One. Karma insures justice and ascension for eveyone.
@squarerootofnine No, that's the point. We have no idea what God is. At least, that's what I think.
God is not defined by our thoughts on god
... is not indifferent to our attitudes about him
... is not surprised by MJ's death
... is not a man
... is not a stupid cartoon with corny lyrics
God is not static...
...homogeneousness...
...egocentric...
...the word...
...confined to the box of any definition
Interesting...I keep reading a lot of comments that say "God is not vengeful" or "God is not judgmental" and I think I have to disagree with these sentiments. If God is not vengeful or judgmental then basically every tyrant in history (for the most part) got away with it. Hitler pretty much got off scot-free if God does not practice justice after this life (suicide is not justice when the systematic genocide of 11 million people are one's crimes). Serial rapists who molest dozens of children and never get caught get away with it. The ancient Assyrians (who were more brutal then the Nazis) got away with it too. If God is not vengeful, then God can not be loving, good, or holy. I hope I do not come off as insulting or belittling, it is not my intention to be that way. I just want to kindly disagree in respectful fashion.
I would also like to recommend Tim Keller's The Reason for God, for more insight upon this subject (God being required to be just/vengeful in order to be good/loving).
1.) God is not a limp-wristed wuss who caters to the wishy-washy ideals of culture.
2.) God is not impersonal
3.) God is not bound by this universe or the laws that he set in place to govern it
4.) God is not small
5.) God is not a means to an end, rather he is the end himself.
@henderson88 I agree with everything that you say. You have really good points.
1. My God is not vengeful.
2. My God is not a specific person, place, or thing.
3. My God is not unloving.
4. My God is not unattainable.
5. My God is not weak.
(I say "my God" because I think everyone's notion and understanding of God is different in their own way.)
1. God is not answering my emails, phone calls or SMS messages.
2. God is not the word dog to dyslexic folk, but more the word good for people who can't spell.
3. God is not so mean as to not allow two people to love and be loved in return. (AND HAVE EQUAL RIGHTS TO LOVE)
4. God is not the recipient of my $5 donation to the person running up to my car with a bucket.

5. God does not look away.
1) God is not: One person, thing or idea. He, She, It...is whatever we create it to be, if we chose to create something at all.
2) God is not: A definite. We, human beings give life to a being, and give it (or, again, He, She It...ect...) human attributes, qualities, again, we create what we want to believe, and call it what we want.
3) God is not: Something that should scare us into acting one way or another. Live life for joy, not fear.
4) God is not: An excuse to persecute, mock, condemn or judge others. It is not an excuse for death and war.
5) God is not: Something that should ever be enforced on anyone...God is NOT an absolute, though people can chose to make it an absolute in their lives.
God is not money, or fame, or people liking me
God is not very concerned with half of the things I think are important
God is not going to do me wrong
God is not relative, changing, dependent or otherwise defined by me
God is not oblivious to this conversation
@marchballad see, i don't know that that makes sense. because, i believe that God is not unknown, and you're claiming God is unknown. if we are the source, how can we both be correct?
@squarerootofnine I just used the bible, which is the manual, as I understand it.
Great! That was really well made, glad I got to see it. What is God NOT? --
God is not crazy about vegetarians. (Rom. 14:2)
God is not a feminist. (1 Tim. 2:11-15)
God is not soft on crime. (Ex. 21:15)
God is not marching in your gay pride parade. (Lev. 18:22)
God is not in favor of allowing non-Christians to be alive. (Deut. 13:6-10)
@squarerootofnine No one knows what or who god is, so these are claims, just like any other claim about god, that we thought up. It is what we are believing at the moment. We are the source. They are our creativity and our beliefs.
1. God is not judgemental.
2. God is not a time keeper.
3. God is not a talker.
4. God is not a set of silly rules.
5. God is not one to leave you be.
God is not unknown.
God is not nameless.
God is not short of cash.
God is not a liar.
God is not me... or you.
I have a question. On what authority are we making these claims about God? Is there a source or are these just the things we think that make us feel better?
1. God is not vengeful.
2. God is not outside of us.
3. God is not attainable to only a few.
4. God is not a man.
5. God is not a capitalist.
When you say that God is incomprehensible, doesn't that render anything else you say about him spurious?
God is not an institution
God is not judgmental
God is not racist
God doesn't care if you're a believer or not
God is not evil

@Mad_Dog_Milo Very true. I didn't give enough thought to my reply, and I got called out on it. Well done.

This is based on my definition of god then!
I don't believe that god is an entity.
I don't believe that god has feelings, moods, desires or any anthropomorphic qualities.... except i suppose for existence?
I don't believe that god can see the future nor can s/he control it.
I don't believe that god lives in "heaven".
I don't believe that i can have a relationship with god. But i believe i can have a relationship with the universe.
@Rasputnik I don't think that is necessarily true. A practicing Hindi could just as easily answer this question, as could a Muslim, a Zoroastrian, a follower of any traditional deity, or a Wiccan. In fact, one could argue that because the Judeo-Christian God revealed the name of God to Moses as "I Am" or as it is being translated recently "I am that which I choose to be" it is more difficult for the Judeo-Christian to answer this question becasue God is that which God chooses to be.
Hard to answer this question without a belief in the Judeo-Christian God.
1. God is not a creation of Man but rather, the other way around
2. God is not a cosmic nanny, stepping in to eliminate the 'bad' things in life for our good pleasure. So many such events are of our/humanity's own making -- and those that are not bring with them lessons and wisdom that can come no other way.
3. God is not a cruel tyrant, but is righteously just. Some processes and actions pursued long enough, inevitably have a bad outcome.
4. God is not bound to change the rules of cause and effect mentioned above just because you happen to think you're nice and deserve a break.
5. God is not "unknowable". His vastness is incomprehensible, but one can still know someone they cannot totally comprehend. Think of when you were young and knew your working parent, but couldn't fathom the idea of going to a job that took you away from home and that you didn't always like just so you could pay for tonight's dinner out at McDonalds.
1. God isn't afraid of what we think of Him.
2. God isn't holding lightening bolts waiting for us to screw up.
3. God isn't chaos.
4. God isn't ever too busy.
5. God isn't anything like we expect Him to be. (Thankfully!))
If God is not comprehensible, which I agree with, then is it not folly to attempt to define what He is or what He is not?
When you say He's incomprehensible, and then you say He does not exclude, you contradict your own thinking.
So to me, there's only one thing, not five, that God is not:
1. God is not comprehensible to me.
As it says in Corinthians, God's foolishness is stronger than human wisdom, and His weakness is stronger than human strength. That's one to contemplate. God's not us.
God made us in His image, but in vanity so many of us remake God into an image of humanity, then become frustrated and trash him when he turns out to be inadequate.
I really like this. My favorite part of the song is God is not a Republican and he's not even an American. I think God is for everyone and all religions and that he reaches out to us through many different avenues/religions. We don't really know his name at all.
