@applegrass I love the way you read that and connected it to particle physics! I think you are right, but I also think the soul is real, in a real, literal and, more-permanent-than-the-universe sense.
You forgot to mention that Krsna presents Him self as the Supreme Perdonality of Godhead in Bhagavad Gita. Also His teachings shows that we individual souls are His eternal fragmentary parts egual to Him in quality but different in quantity.
@zamfir All right... humour me for a bit here. Imagine you're a 14th century mystic/alchemist, who *gets* particle physics... you understand (nevermind how just for the moment) that everything we interact with is made of elements too small for us to see. Now, how in the world would you go about convincing your other 14th centurions that you are right about this theory? Considering you'd be hanged as a heretic for merely claiming the earth revolved around the sun instead of the other way around, the rational knowledge-base just isn't there for other to deduce the same conclusion.
So what's a noble pre-chemist to do? Couching your theories in flowery, metaphoric god-speak seems like an easy out, imo, especially b/c you don't even have a sophisticated enough language to describe what you know. Can you have a little empathy for these writers?
Oh and btw... that conservation of energy stuff is a powerful theory indeed, especially for modern science. We don't even fully grasp what animates life or bonds basic matter. So how are we to deduce where human energy goes after 'death,' assuming matter/energy really isn't created or destroyed (only transfered)? You said in another post that all good things have a beginning, middle, and end. True, if by 'things' you mean 'forms.' Remember... what/who you 'are' doesn't ever go away, merely changes. That's basically what the Gita says; all the rest is flowery god-speak. Love you Charlie (sorry... not your tuna, tho).
You find this in India as a kind of mini poster with the caption "THE ESSENCE OF BHAGAVAD GITA" in several regional languages across the country. Indeed a great eye opener for ordinary mortals!
No offense, but it sounds pretty hippy-dippy. Fire, water, earth and ether? Yeah... No.

@Billass Could be... what you say about the soul. However, I don't think it needs to be mutually exclusive, nor an aside to particle physics/the universe. I genuinely believe they point to/are in reality the exact same things. Lots of love (love could very well be that thing... pet physics theory).
