Admit it: One of the reasons you love your favorite authors and artists is for their insane ability to capture in words exactly how we feel. They say what we want to say, what we want to hear, even our inner most intentions. The posters at contrariwise take that concept seriously enough to go under the needle. Permanently. In that vein (no pun intended):

What quote, lyric, poem, or piece of prose do you love enough to want permanently imprinted on your body?

if i'd to get a tattoo it would be purely words and small and written on the inside of my left arm (so i can read it anytime and be reminded) and it would be from this bible verse (ph 4:8)-- ...whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

There are so many that I'd love to have. Many, in particular, I would like to have as a sort of tribute for my best friend, who was murdered a few months ago. Some are a wee bit cheesy; I like them anyway. "Non est ad astra mollis e terris via." ("There is no easy way from the earth to the stars.") - Seneca the Younger "Here we are, trapped in the amber of the moment. There is no why." - Kurt Vonnegut There are so many, but I suppose I'll stop. Don't wanna be obnoxious.

I've got the picture from the very last page of "The Little Prince" on the back of my neck with this quote in French: "Send word he has returned." On my arm, I have a banner that's part of a larger family piece. It says "Tuck and Roll." That's what my dad used to say to always do if you were to fall off a roof. And I used it in his eulogy.

You know I really love this quote.... "I have defied Gods and Demons. I am your sheild, I am your sword. I know you, your past, your future. This is the way the world ends." If you know where this comes from, I know a little nerdy, but it isreally epic and I've found meaning in it that really applies to the way I want to llive my life.

I am still in the process of getting the entirety of my upper back tattooes. It's an image of a beta fish with kelp and water and gems all around it. There is an old school ribbon about it that says "Twinkle Twinkle Little Fish"... When I was pregnant I used to refer to my son in the womb as my little fish. A friend and I went to paint ceramics and I took it one step further to paint something for his nursery that says "Twinkle Twinkle Little Fish, How I Wonder What You Wish" and I took it from there. I knew I wanted a half back piece and I thought a tribute to my first born was fitting. Since then, and it might sound cheesy but I love this song lyric and would make an awesome tattoo, is from the Drake song 'Best I Ever Had' when he raps, "you can have my heart or we can share it like the last slice"... being a native to New York I think a melty pepperoni heart shaped pizza on the inside of my arm or back of my thigh would be awesome =]

I love Shakespeare's Sonnet 116: "Let me not to the marriage of true minds Admit impediments." It is a profoundly moving sentiment that can reflect every kind of connection between people: lovers, friends, siblings, colleagues, fellow believers or adherents to a religion, political view or philosophy, or even people on opposite sides of an ideological fence who for once find something to agree on. It can refer to people who see each other face to face, or those separated by continents and oceans. For me this line best embodies the relationship between my husband and me, for we truly experience a meeting of minds. And I hope it will embody the relationship between my readers and me, as it does the relationship I have with my most beloved authors - though we have never met.

There are many versions of this but my favorite is "Dream, Believe, Achieve". I think this encompasses the concept that you create your own reality and only you have the power to change your world. Speak out and make aware, whether its suffering or happiness, witness it.

I want to get the following text tattoos: "So it goes" from Slaughterhouse Five by Vonnegut and "Don't panic" from Hitchhiker's Guide by Douglas Adams on my inner forearms. I tend to be a very anxious person, aside from being references to two books that were critical in defining my tastes in literature, they're reminders to stop and take a breath, not to freak out, and that I can't always control everything. "My love is a fever, longing still" by Shakespeare worked into my chest piece. I love Shakespeare. I had read his complete works by the time I was a freshman in high school and that is the first line of one of my favorite sonnets. "I love you much(most beautiful darling)" by e.e. cummings around my wrist. For my five year old daughter. The poem just speaks to me. I've kicked around a few other ideas for textual tattoos, like "I am, I am, I am" from Plath's The Bell Jar, a few other lines from Shakespeare, etc. Those are the ones that have really stuck with me.

All is fair in LOVE&WAR....... life isnt fair but we can only keep moving on word. I got this tattoo'd on my skin at a time when I was so very lost. I married my high school sweetheart and then we left our family's and moved as far away as we could, then he told me I could do better and I need to leave. We need to move on. so love is war....and never fair! -Im not sure who wrote it.

"Is there life on Mars?"--David Bowie, Life on Mars? (One of my favorite songs of all time. It also poses an interesting question, both in and out of the context of the song. The song itself is a little nonsensical, the second verse is basically just a bunch of random things one would see while walking down a street, but the lyric, in the song, for me, it is another way of saying "Is there hope?" Outside of the song, I think it means "What else is there?" It's just such an amazing song and a deep lyric. Love Bowie so much. (: ) "You were fantastic. And you know what? So was I!"--Ninth Doctor, Doctor Who. (These are the last words the Ninth Doctor says to his companion, Rose, and, for some last words, they're great.)

I just had a Nietzsche quote tattooed on my right shoulder blade Thursday. It says " man muß noch Chaos in sich haben, um einen tanzenden Stern gebären zu können." Rough english translation is one must have chaos within oneself, to give birth to a dancing star.

Already got two "text tattoos"... I have my cities symbol with "This city's heart beats" above it. The whole line is "In these city streets, is where this city's heart beats" by an old nashville band called Hollywood. (No I'm not from nashville) and I have "I guess this is growing up..." This is a line from my favorite band for the past 10 years...

For me this is really weird timing, as I'm going to get a quote from my favorite author tattooed on my back next week! It's "So it goes." from Kurt Vonnegut.

@katiedelmar I might get that first quote inked too. It comes from what was my confirmation verse being raised Lutheran, and though my faith has changed, it still resonates with me.

@Silverain13 Originally, These are famous lines from a famous poem-" Do not go gentle into that good night" written by Dylan Thomas in 1951, published in 1952, for his dying father. It's a cool poem, check it out.

Or maybe, since my given name is really Hope, I would do some pun or play on that, as in Emily Dickinson's "Hope is the thing with feathers." It might be funny to get "thing with feathers" tattooed on my back.

I have never wanted a tattoo-- one of those "not sure I want to join the club" sort of things-- but there is one poem I return to every so often that I may as well get on my skin, since I reference it so much. "Meditation at Lagunitas" by Robert Hass is a brilliant poem that maybe I would get some part of permanently etched into my skin one day: "Longing, we say, because desire is full of endless distances." "days that are the good flesh continuing" "blackberry, blackberry, blackberry" Complete poem: "All the new thinking is about loss. In this it resembles all the old thinking. The idea, for example, that each particular erases the luminous clarity of a general idea. That the clown- faced woodpecker probing the dead sculpted trunk of that black birch is, by his presence, some tragic falling off from a first world of undivided light. Or the other notion that, because there is in this world no one thing to which the bramble of blackberry corresponds, a word is elegy to what it signifies. We talked about it late last night and in the voice of my friend, there was a thin wire of grief, a tone almost querulous. After a while I understood that, talking this way, everything dissolves: justice, pine, hair, woman, you and I. There was a woman I made love to and I remembered how, holding her small shoulders in my hands sometimes, I felt a violent wonder at her presence like a thirst for salt, for my childhood river with its island willows, silly music from the pleasure boat, muddy places where we caught the little orange-silver fish called pumpkinseed. It hardly had to do with her. Longing, we say, because desire is full of endless distances. I must have been the same to her. But I remember so much, the way her hands dismantled bread, the thing her father said that hurt her, what she dreamed. There are moments when the body is as numinous as words, days that are the good flesh continuing. Such tenderness, those afternoons and evenings, saying blackberry, blackberry, blackberry."

jacquiebee

and all the wasted nights and empty moments in our lives are flushed away as we sway with the rhythm of the waves bobbing us up. Crests fall to troughs as we feel our gills open up and sail belly up to the clouds, the rocks scraping our backs. To breathe in the air will be the only thing that we have. --"this is not an exit" by saves the day i have always loved this song--when i was a freshman in high school, and even now that i'm a panicking post grad. i think this song is a response to eliot's "love song of j.alfred prufrock." the sea isn't just an escape in this song. it is an escape, but it is also an embrace of life and love, and facing the inevitable with a smile that shows teeth.

It begins, "Dear friend, far off, my lost desire,/ So far, so near in woe and weal;/ O loved the most, when most I feel/ There is a lower and a higher." This was a poem we went over in one of my English classes soon after my best friend died in a car accident. These words really spoke to me.

"take that love you made" - Regina Spektor It's from her song On The Radio, which has some of my favorite lyrics by her. The entire quote is: "This is how it works- you're young until you're not, you love until you don't, you try until you can't. You laugh until you cry, you cry until you laugh, and everyone must breathe until their dying breath. No, this is how it works - you peer inside yourself you take the things you like and try to love the things you took. And then you take that love you made and stick it into some - someone else's heart pumping someone else's blood. And walking arm in arm, you hope it don't get harmed but even if it does you'll just do it all again." I love the quote enough to want to get the entire thing tattooed, but it's kinda long, haha. I feel like "take that love you made" sums it up nicely.
