Admit it: One of the reasons you love your favorite authors and artists is for their insane ability to capture in words exactly how we feel. They say what we want to say, what we want to hear, even our inner most intentions. The posters at contrariwise take that concept seriously enough to go under the needle. Permanently. Everyday I look at it and I know that I've been given another day to improve beyond what I was as a human yesterday...the only "anti" that can be called is "anti-stagnant" ; ) I think your idea is awesome too.

On my arm, I have a banner that's part of a larger family piece. It says "Tuck and Roll." That's what my dad used to say to always do if you were to fall off a roof. And I used it in his eulogy.

- 10 months agoI am still in the process of getting the entirety of my upper back tattooes. It's an image of a beta fish with kelp and water and gems all around it. There is an old school ribbon about it that says "Twinkle Twinkle Little Fish"... When I was pregnant I used to refer to my son in the womb as my little fish. A friend and I went to paint ceramics and I took it one step further to paint something for his nursery that says "Twinkle Twinkle Little Fish, How I Wonder What You Wish" and I took it from there. I knew I wanted a half back piece and I thought a tribute to my first born was fitting. Since then, and it might sound cheesy but I love this song lyric and would make an awesome tattoo, is from the Drake song 'Best I Ever Had' when he raps, "you can have my heart or we can share it like the last slice"... being a native to New York I think a melty pepperoni heart shaped pizza on the inside of my arm or back of my thigh would be awesome =]

It is a profoundly moving sentiment that can reflect every kind of connection between people: lovers, friends, siblings, colleagues, fellow believers or adherents to a religion, political view or philosophy, or even people on opposite sides of an ideological fence who for once find something to agree on. It can refer to people who see each other face to face, or those separated by continents and oceans. For me this line best embodies the relationship between my husband and me, for we truly experience a meeting of minds. And I hope it will embody the relationship between my readers and me, as it does the relationship I have with my most beloved authors - though we have never met.

- 10 months agoThere are many versions of this but my favorite is "Dream, Believe, Achieve". I think this encompasses the concept that you create your own reality and only you have the power to change your world. I would also tat Witness somewhere on my body because I believe its vitally important to be a witness to those who have no witness. Speak out and make aware, whether its suffering or happiness, witness it.

- 10 months agoI want to get the following text tattoos: "So it goes" from Slaughterhouse Five by Vonnegut and "Don't panic" from Hitchhiker's Guide by Douglas Adams on my inner forearms. I tend to be a very anxious person, aside from being references to two books that were critical in defining my tastes in literature, they're reminders to stop and take a breath, not to freak out, and that I can't always control everything. "My love is a fever, longing still" by Shakespeare worked into my chest piece. I love Shakespeare. I had read his complete works by the time I was a freshman in high school and that is the first line of one of my favorite sonnets. "I love you much(most beautiful darling)" by e.e. cummings around my wrist. For my five year old daughter. The poem just speaks to me. I've kicked around a few other ideas for textual tattoos, like "I am, I am, I am" from Plath's The Bell Jar, a few other lines from Shakespeare, etc. Those are the ones that have really stuck with me.

- 11 months agoAs a poet, it's so freaking hard to choose because I love words so very, very much. My husband got Verse 70 from the Tao Te Ching in the original Chinese on his left arm, and a friend of mine got a quote from Roethke: "I feel my fate in what I cannot fear." Today I'm getting a comic book character on my upper right arm, but I'm still considering getting some text inked somewhere.

I would either get "Don't stop believing" because as much as I love it for a karaoke song, the phrase still works, or I would get "2 legit 2 quit." Word.

- 11 months agoI have never wanted a tattoo-- one of those "not sure I want to join the club" sort of things-- but there is one poem I return to every so often that I may as well get on my skin, since I reference it so much. "Meditation at Lagunitas" by Robert Hass is a brilliant poem that maybe I would get some part of permanently etched into my skin one day: "Longing, we say, because desire is full of endless distances." "days that are the good flesh continuing" "blackberry, blackberry, blackberry" Complete poem: "All the new thinking is about loss. In this it resembles all the old thinking. The idea, for example, that each particular erases the luminous clarity of a general idea. That the clown- faced woodpecker probing the dead sculpted trunk of that black birch is, by his presence, some tragic falling off from a first world of undivided light. Or the other notion that, because there is in this world no one thing to which the bramble of blackberry corresponds, a word is elegy to what it signifies. We talked about it late last night and in the voice of my friend, there was a thin wire of grief, a tone almost querulous. The entire quote is: "This is how it works- you're young until you're not, you love until you don't, you try until you can't. No, this is how it works - you peer inside yourself you take the things you like and try to love the things you took. And then you take that love you made and stick it into some - someone else's heart pumping someone else's blood. - 11 months agoI have a few, but significant: "Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt" - Kurt Vonnegut and "Life's not a paragraph [and] death [i think] is no parenthesis" the bracketed words aren't in the tattoo but in the original poem by e.e. cummings. I also have a portrait tattoo of Shakespeare.

- 11 months agoNo way will I ever willingly get a tattoo. But when flexible LCDs are available I might graft it on my chest along with a wifi connection and sell it for advertising. I'd charge extra for having to work around topless in public, and the models boobs better be bigger than my own even if they be men. That goes for Soulpancake.com too.
