Is Ignorance Bliss?

"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the piece and safety of a new dark age." - H.P. Lovecraft So, some day we'll discover something that will drive us as a culture insane, or we'll reject science for a comforting ignorance. Does this mean we should drop everything and accept the world we live in, or should we continue to reach out and discover new frightening things until we reach the breaking point? And is there a middle path?

Sometimes. I definitely feel like I'd be much happier if I didn't watch the news.

Keep reaching, rising, and discovering until we fall, and do it all over again... just as in life itself

It sure can be - but so can heroin.

A little ignorance is human, i feel. However, since bliss is most definitely not ignorance, i would have to conclude that ignorance cannot be bliss.

I agree that we are lucky we are ignorant of certain things because there are things that would literally blow our minds, and we can't ever possibly understand everything perfectly.

kind of rambling here:

But i also agree with Zamfir and Captain_Adventure. I think that we should all try to avoid being ignorant of anything if we can help it.. What I mean to say is that people who are ignorant of things like racism, or people who stick to one opinion without exploring other options make me sad... Everyone should try to explore as much truth and opinions as they can. Which is really what this site is for which is why it is awesome. So really, let me rephrase the first part of my post.. As long as we always try to be open to truths and not close minded, we can't really be ignorant, can we. Okay, let me ask this, cause i'm confusing myself: If we don't understand something that we havn't been told about is that ignorance? Because if it's not, then ignorance would be completely a bad thing, but I dont know...

Ignorance is piss... mostly.

I think most of the world's problems stem from ignorance. However, that is not to say that ignorance in and of itself is bad.
