How do you handle your in-laws? Any rules? Bargains? Spoken or unspoken? How do you cope?

My mother and father in-law were in town recently. I have become aware of the unspoken bargain I have made with them. Keep the peace at the expense of who I really am. Argh.

am I lucky OR WHAT?

Then again, I think my own parents like my husband better than me. LOL.

I've opted for the agree to disagree. I learned along time ago that people aren't going to be around forever so it's best to enjoy their company while they're around. If that means biting my tounge or rephrasing my opinion so it's more delicately said then that's a price i'm willing to pay to keep peace, but at the end of the day I am who I am, they are who they are and we all get along and accept each other for that.

I let them in and in the end I show them out. Everything in between I hold my breath.

I am a Pagan/Wiccan and my in laws are die hard Christians. I've been married now for 9 years and we've never had the 'religious' discussion. I used to worry that one day it'd come up and we'd have some huge row, but now I'm secure in the thought that whenever/ if ever we do have that talk, it'd all come out okay. Probably because out of all the in laws they've been stuck with, I'm the most normal and down to earth...lol Funny, isn't it?

So, I'd say, you are who you are (like Popeye!). They can't change that. If you put on a different 'face' around them, to keep the peace, then to me that's no different than looking at a diamond from a different facet. It's still a diamond! If you really can't stand another minute of not being yourself around them, then sit them down and fill them in. Just be ready for the consequences. Good luck!
