Where is your Yosemite?

For Henry David Thoreau it was Walden Pond. For John Muir it was Yosemite. Some people just have a special place amongst nature, be it for solitude, silence, spiritual growth, or mental refreshment, where they can get away from it all. What is your connection to nature, why do you feel that way, and where do you go to experience it? For me it is in southwest Oklahoma, generally anywhere in the Wichita Mountains. Places like Quartz Mountain or Tom Steed Lake are so otherworldly, and since the Wichitas are located in a vast, flat space of empty plains, it can get pretty quiet, so I don't have to listen to the traffic whiz by each night. Instead I get to listen to coyotes howl, or be visited by buffaloes in the middle of the night, as was the case once at the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge. It was pretty damn scary, actually, but it also made me feel alive.

I felt something special in Ireland when I was on the hill of Tara, and I love quiet open windy spaces. And I grew up near the ocean- I love a good deserted beach, preferably in autumn.

There's a little National Park by my house, that has outlooks over the city. At night when the whole city is lit up, and it's a nice summer night, it's my favorite place.

Upstate SC has 2 parks I get to often. The first is Table Rock- very popular. The second is a series of trails officially called Mnt Bridge Wilderness area. It ranges from a drive up overlook, to extremely rugged trails. Both areas are connected by a 77 mile trail that runs across the top of the state. No matter how many times I've been, I always find new things. My most exciting encounters are with black bears I scared up, the funniest are when 2 black vultures spooked my dog. Being there renews me in a way nothing else can.

That ain't Yosemite, Been in the valley 6? times. Only was able to drive Tioga Rd once. Hiked to Angel Falls alone(easy). A place that marvelous gets overrun, Glacier still has a feel of virginity to it. Has no parallel in US either. It's like mountains that somehow were created a different way.

My place is at Captain Jack's Stronghold in Lava Beds National Park, northwest of Alturas, CA. My soul feels back to home there and in the caves.

@muswellhillbilly i'm actually kind of a cemetery snob, no perfectly-tended, respectable cemetery will win me over. it has to have the right mood, the right vibe, or else i get weird thoughts about people that cling to life and caskets that never rot and people who wanted their bodies to just sit, unused and unappreciated for centuries.
