Are we able to choose when this physical human experience begins and ends?

If we are energetic beings before we have physical bodies, then it would be fair to say that we are still energetic beings when we have bodies. This indicates that there is some form of consciousness or 'knowing' that exists before being the physical incarnation of a human being. If this is the case, it's possible to assume (on a soul level) that we choose the family into which we are born and a time at which we leave our physical bodies. The coming into the world part suggests that there is a destiny of what must be accomplished whilst we are here. The leaving the world part suggests that we do indeed have a say about when this could happen. It puts all the choices our lives, squarely in our own laps, meaning that we cannot blame anyone or any situation for the quality of our lives and/or that we only have ourselves to thank when we have chosen well in how we experience life. We may leave our bodies through dis-ease or suicide or by simply not having anything else to accomplish. It's of no interest to me to become moralistic towards anyone for wanting to leave this world at what ever stage in whatever circumstance. It is of interest to me that I learn what I need to learn though while I am here :D

Hawk was a Cherokee medicine man (died a while back now) who I was privileged to get to know - wisdom that was so concise it could end a busy conversation with a satisfied knowing smile all round...

I have heard this particular belief system a lot. I do think we choose to come here and we have the power to leave whenever we want. As for the "other" thoughts....do not really buy into as much. "We come here to learn or accomplished....something???" I really "feel" I came here to just BE.....I don't really think we have "lessons" to learn...we do absolutely learn and expand while we are living, but this being our main goal...I don't have this idea in mind.

The only person who decided when u are going to be born and when ur time is up is:
GOD.
we have no power over that we do have the power to end out life faster, whats sad.

I find your thoughts provocative (in a good way) and mostly agree. I am uncertain about willing ourselves into physical existence but I do know people can will themselves out of existence when they feel their task is complete -- or put it off to languish is years of self-imposed lonely uselessness.

The point of difference however, would be suicide and perhaps euthanasia (still undecided). In these is the assumption that we are both alone and almighty in deciding when our usefulness is at an end; denying the possibility that there MAY be some things left undone that our all-knowing self cannot yet see. Many times people rely on us in ways we are unaware of. Just because we don't think we have a purpose, doesn't mean that we don't. Just that we cannot see it.
It's like leaving the game we've paid so much to see when we're sure nothing else could possibly happen to save the day . . . only to miss a spectacular play and reversal of fortunes that people will talk about for years to come. You were there. You paid for your seat. But you left it early, unable to see any use in staying.

Hmmm, Noetic Science anyone? :) I know, I know, *but* in Dan Brown's latest book he talks about an experiment done where a dying person is placed in an airtight container that had very specific weight measurements that went many zeros past the decimal. When the person passes, the weight in this airtight container got lighter, indicating that something ethereal left the body that just died. I thought that was really fascinating. (Brown says that all the experiments in the story are actual experiments in the field of Noetic Science.) It could be bunk, but if it isn't - it's really interesting.

I say as I said somewhere else, its an appealing idea but - Hawk's answer on reincarnation (which is what you are describing in essence) = "Too many answers"

Makes sense to me. We are energetic beings... energy cannot be created or destroyed only transfered... so when the body dies the energy within has to go somewhere. (I've argued this before and hold my position on the matter).

As far as choices go I would theorize that this is what may be know as karma. If you had an opps! in a past life the best way to understand is to walk a mile (or life time) in differant shoes. The more past life opps you deal with while simultaneously not creating any more the better your next life is likely to be (less to have to atone for in a way). It's just a theory.

I had another theory regarding Deja Vu, the soul, and time travel... how it's all connected because a soul exsists in some form outside of normal boundries. If the energy of your soul moved faster than the speed of light while out of body then you could travel through time either forward or backward, thus later experiance Deja vu while in body (or past life regression). Or if the soul exists outside of space and time. Again just a theory... I have no scientific proof it's just an idea.

That's one of those ultimate questions. Are we really ABLE to choose? If that's the case, I'm not sure what the hell my soul was thinking when it chose this.

For sure you are able to choose when it ends, given the right tools are at your disposal. But to say whether or not we choose the bodies we inhabit -- I can only answer with more questions! If we are able to choose the body, does that mean we know how the life is going to play out? Obviously if our soul knew we are definitely not privy to that information in the here and now. What of free will? Or what if the soul doesn't know how it's going to turn out? What factors influence the soul's particular choice? What if the soul had intended to learn something particular, and you live your entire life without getting anywhere near that? What if your soul is just a crackup who thought it would be funny to choose a particular life? What if it's not the soul who chooses, but something else, something higher?

[Head explodes.]
