How do you measure happiness?

Someone the other day said they were waiting around for the good things to happen to them. This statement bothered me a little because everyday I try to look for things that would essentially be good things. Some examples of this would be. Fried Pickles Wet dog kisses for no reason Finding a piece of Halloween chocolate you forgot about A really great instant play movie on Netflix How about you?

I don't know if you can truly measure happiness. It makes me happy to find a five dollar bill in my washed pair of jeans, but it also makes me happy to sit on the couch and do nothing with my husband. How do you measure something that seems like it can range so greatly? I also am not too sure if we should really try to measure happiness. If we try to measure it, does it open us up to questioning how much happier can we be, rather than living in the joy that we already have? Does it then become a compitition?

measure happiness?
- its been done, internationally...

the happiest nation on the planet is Bhutan apparently (no roads, no TV, but very smiley united people)

happiness is not what I would measure though - "contentment with life" is closer to it.
and that is clearly proportionate to the narrower the gap between rich and poor. excluding the freakier nations like Bhutan makes more sense as well....

eliminate the very extreme and the bigger, and more visible, the gap among the 98% of the population left gives you a good guide. (US research I believe)

(UK and USA don't do brilliantly well on this)

compares the weight of two beauties
the gravity of duties
or the ground speed of joy?
tell me what kind of gauge
can quantify elation?
what kind of equation
could i possibly employ? (Ani DiFranco)

Happiness can be found all around me every day of my life. Right now, I am finding happiness in a cup of coffee.
