Saturday, October 31, 2009 - LIFES BIG QUESTIONS

:: swirls-to-suits by Matt Goold
When I was 18 I was going to start college and study sound/foly and music, but then I found out I was pregnant in April of my senior year. I chose to put my creativity on hold to seek the steady income necessary to support a child. Now that I have decided to stop having kids and the kids I have are older I am pursuing my music again and I feel better then ever. I feel complete.
I definetly put my dreams aside for a paycheck. Mostly out of fear.....which I am slowly overcoming. Risks are all part of the game. But I also know that everything happens for a reason. It's all unfolding this way in perfect order. The key is to keep that in mind when frustration sets in. If my circumstances were any different I may not be making the music that I am right know. The big question is.......When do you know the time is right to take the risk and make that leap?
I think that I, and a lot of other people, cast our creative selves aside every day so that we can make enough money to pay the bills so that when our 8 hours are done each day, we can play and be creative in whatever we enjoy. Unfortunately, making awesome bakery for my family or working in my garden or planning something fun to do with my grandkids is my kind of creativity, but none of the above pay the bills!
Yeah my dream is on hold right now.... Working 3 part-time jobs doesn't leave me much time to pursue my creative dreams... :( so basically everyday of my life I think about it..
I am a 23 year old musicician/producer/laptop artist(whatever) and a photographer and I will graduate from college with a political science degree about a month from right now, so this question couldn't hit any closer to home for me. As of right now it looks like "the man" has already won as my creative dreams have already been tossed aside while I spent the last few months looking for jobs that will pay the bills instead of spending time with my creative outlets. As much as I would love to receive a paycheck for producing random songs and mash-ups (which apparently have become so common now that spell check changes mashup to mash-up) it doesn't look like it is in the cards. So to make a long story short... is anyone hiring?
